Recently ARC hosted an information session for Service Users and their families interested in knowing more about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). With over 80 people requesting to attend, ARC had to source a new location at Brothers Leagues Club as we had outgrown our meeting room at Little Street. Presenter Linda Hayes delivered her session “NDIS in the Real World” and provided some useful and easy to understand information.

Two of the main themes from the evening were transport; and ‘don’t be afraid to ask’. What Linda meant by this is.

  • If you feel any activity that is outlined in your NDIS plan will require transport then ask, ask, ask. It may not be offered otherwise and the worst response you will get is a polite ‘no’.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask. Whether it be for core supports or for capital expenditure do not be afraid to include it in your plan because again if you do not request it, it will not be offered.

Another theme of the evening was preparation. The planning meeting that you will have with the representatives from the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) will only be about 90 minutes; this is not a long time at all so you should prepare for it. ARC is happy to assist you with this and you can either request to do this with your current coordinator, through contacting Phil, ARC’s NDIS project officer (email/philipwright)(arcinc.org.au), or by contacting myself at email/natasha)(arcinc.org.au or on 07 4046 3600. There is no cost for this service.

In addition, if you are offered a telephone interview we encourage you to decline it and insist on a face to face meeting. You are entitled to this under law and it will not have any negative impact on your plan. In fact we have found that a face-to-face meeting is far more effective than one conducted over the phone.

On ARC’s website there is also a ‘frequently asked questions’ about the NDIS and we will shortly have some other useful links on there.

Although this whole social reform appears a little scary there are exciting times ahead. Please check our website or Facebook page for any updates or contact ARC 40463600.

ARC will be looking to include more frequent blogs as we prepare for July 2018, so please let us know if there is are specific topics you may be interested in.
